    You can actually just checkout to the branch. So git checkout somebranch is equivalent. Commented Apr 8, 2014 at 10:15

    Not immediately, but yes, you do need to have a reference to that branch on your local repo, which happens whenever you call git fetch or git pull. I've never found that to be an issue, though. Commented Mar 12, 2015 at 13:14
