P.S, I got over the foregroud color issue by painting it black when selected.

this works for me (as far a the color goes) except the toggle button won't open the item anymore. :-(

So I changed the IsChecked on the ToggleButton to IsChecked="{Binding IsExpanded, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}" and now it's working.
