So, I'm pretty confident that this worked. The only reason I accepted the other answer is because it doesn't require a call to an external process, and just seems like a more elegant solution. This is a nifty tool and I plan to apply it to other applications! Thanks again.

create code fences with backticks ` or tildes ~

like so

for linebreak add 2 spaces at end
