    This doesn't work as written (the forward slashes make the replace do nothing), uses wildly outdated APIs (the string module functions of this sort are deprecated as of Python 2.0, replaced by the str methods, and gone completely in Python 3), and only handles the specific case of replacing a single newline, not general escape processing.
