Confluence

A commercial wiki. Confluence is a shared whiteboard wiki, whereas TWiki is a shared whiteboard and a StructuredWiki to write TWikiApplications.

To do: Create a competitive comparison table; write a "TWiki in a Nutshell for Confluence Customers" (similar to the one in the JotSpot topic)

Discussion

Now they have build a Universal Wiki Converter, to convert from other wikies to Confluence. Once of the supported formats is TWiki.

In other words, it is time to create a ConfluenceToTWikiAddOn, among other existing Tag:import tools smile

Hm, Confluence isn't nearly as expensive as I would have guessed. See (german) prices and compare them with TWIKI.NET pricing.

-- FranzJosefGigler - 18 Dec 2007

On the other hand, there is only one way to use Confluence, and only one company that can publish fixes - whereas TWiki has more than just TWIKI.NET that does support, and anyone can fix, improve, and influence anything, anytime.

I just checked confluence again. It is no real alternative to TWiki compared by plugins and their quality.

Confluence value lies in that it is:

  • much cheaper than TWiki.net
  • integrated in a global offering that together make a one-stop "sourceforge like". Get a SVN repo, and add Jira, Fisheye, Crowd, ... you get a killer cheap package for the specific needs of small/medium development groups (they may lack a mailing list tool however)
Granted, it is less versatile, robust and flexible than TWiki. But it is more adapted to some markets.

Since 10 Jul 2008 it has a SharePoint Connector frown

Some good news instead: there shall be Mockups support for TWiki.

We should try to focus on a detailed review of Confluence on a feature basis. What does it provide as features, that TWiki does not and vice versa. Also an opinion on the usability would be good. Does anybody have access to a confluence-impementation.

Carlo: Didn't you say, you had?

Hi Guys, have a look at - http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Plugins/ConfluenceToTWikiAddOn

-- SopanShewale - 06 Aug 2008

Yep, we have a hugue, huge Confluence installation at IBM, some 300.000 pages in total I believe... We'll see if I find some time to write some quick notes about it

-- CarloSchulz - 10 Aug 2008

That would be great.
