Puppy Linux

Last Update: 2026-03-24 13:55 UTC

Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 30 (361), 6 months: 30 (386), 3 months: 32 (372), 4 weeks: 39 (353), 1 week: 55 (295)

Average visitor rating: 7.6/10 from 77 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Tried Trixie on an old Gateway NV78 4GB RAM 125GB ssd replaced original HD, and a Thdeukoty i7 mini 8GB RAM and an ssd. Booted from a Ventoy stick to test, and worked, and made a save file for the Gateway, which later copied to the mini. Installed Trixie as Debian Live with YUMI multibooter and worked for both computers.

First, Trixie is not a PuppyLinux, it's a bloated Debian frankenpup with Wayland plastered in as WE/Desktop, and Wayland is a long way from being ready for Prime Time. As a matter of fact PuppyLinux really has not been PuppyLinux since BionicPup; Xenial was the last true Pup. Deja Moo of Opera 12, we've seen this bull before.

That said both computers ran well and everything more or less worked. The Gateway ran cooler than the other OSes on it, and the mini as a fanless did very well. The WM needs to be chosen to get a right click menu, not the Wayland menu. Drive icons not accessible on either computer. Autohide taskbar not available likewise; editing the tb file, if you know how, might fix that -- it's like writing a .json file for FF to make it stop nagging for updates. Pmount accessed the drives, but I'm used to clicking a drive icon for mount/unmount; with Pmount doing so on the Gateway it blackscreened the function each time. Way more junks than needed autostarts. Ethernet is all I use, connected fine.

The Gateway 1600X900 24bit just as good as all OSes on it. The mini is connected to a 50" screen and default to 1080P 32, so very small until changed to 1360X768. Caveat, move icons to center of screen before changing, for you many never see them again if you do not.

The saying, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck does not apply here. Bark all you want Trixie is not a Puppylinux. As tested it seems to be an acceptable Debian variant, as most of the backgrounds infer, but it is not a Puppy, and Wayland is not ready to watch ole Bandit run.

I'm using Trixiepup64 wayland and Slacko32, installed on an 2007 desktop, 2012 laptop, 2009 laptop, 2007 netbook. Machines vary from i3 to atom n270, 8gb ram to 1gb ram, 1tb hdd to 8gb hdd.

TIP: Use google AI to get installation instructions or goto puppy forum.Installation is different than other linux or windows distros.

Pros: Fast and stable. Install libreoffice and your productive.

Cons: Printing is old school CUPS. Puppy in my opinion needs to get rid of that and put in automated installer like Ubuntu or Mint. CUPS is not beginner friendly but use google AI and your'll figure it out. I don't see why user has to fiddle with this since other distros have it fully automated. Another Con is the kernel 6.12 series. It would be great if there was a easy choice like Mxlinux so newer hardware like usb wifi was recognized.

Pros: Fantastic distro for older hardware. Most distros don't care about support for older hardware. Puppy does and it is stable and fast. Out of the box it'll run on a usb and save info on it. Install it to hdd and its faster.

I really want to try either the Wayland or Retro version of TrixiePup64, but they both seem to have mis-configured boot files. All I get upon booting up the USB is

"Booting 'find /menu.lst, /boot/grub/menu.lst, /grub/menu.lst'" and then GRUB4DOS ... and a grub> prompt.

Trying to escape back and edit the first line doesn't work. If I try booting with UEFI enabled, I get a message about no EFI file found, blah, blah, blah.

Oh, and I was misled into thinking that the ISO had both the Wayland and the Retro stuff, but there are two different ISOs. Neither work. Boo-hoo!

I tried going to the Puppy Linux Forum for help and TRIED to register, but the li'l quiz at the bottom kept telling me I gave a wrong answer. (All the quzzes seem to be punk rock band stuff, FWIW. :-) ) Wish I could really review the distro, but this is all I can do!
