Garuda Linux

Last Update: 2026-03-09 08:45 UTC

Garuda Linux is a rolling distribution based on the Arch Linux operating system. Unlike Arch Linux, Garuda Linux comes with a graphical installer (Calamares) for easy installation, and other advanced graphical tools for managing your system. Garuda is a performance-oriented distro with many performance enhancing tweaks. Some of the many tweaks include using zram, a performance CPU governor, along with custom memory management software. Garuda Linux has striven to provide system stability by including the Timeshift backup utility.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I installed it on my HP desktop with an Intel i5 and 8gb of ram. Install and everything went file with no issues. I installed Discover for my apps as I quite like it better. It's not a beginner distro but it's also not that hard to setup and use. I did not user there FireDragon although I suppose it would be my second choice as a browser. I like the graphics and the many options you can choose from. I would prefer a standard menu for installs over RANI.

Everything was setup for me and worked right out of the box as they say. I debated on Endeavour over Garuda, maybe made the right choice or not, not sure. Aside from RANI I would say it's almost perfect , if there is such a thing.

I would have preferred the menu to be down at the bottom like most distros have but oh well. I don't find the ram usage to be any heavier than normal when compared to other distros. I'm using KDE as my desktop but maybe if I had a do-over I might have chosen Cinnamon.

Spin it up in a vm to try and see if you like it although nothing in a vm is the same as bare metal.
I can say that I highly recommend this distro. If you love Arch and like simplicity, it's for you.

This is my favorite arch distro and in general. Everything just works out of the box and the best part is, even though it is a rolling release, it is the most stable experience I've ever had. Everything about it is very user friendly, you can download all of the needed packages through the garuda toolbox gui or octopi, so you don't have to touch the terminal.

This distro also has the best implementation of BTRFS, where snapper has been preinstalled without having to set it up unlike in Cachy OS. If your pc goes through "emergency mode", you can boot the live usb and chroot it through the gui, you don't have to use the terminal, much better than Cachy OS's implementation.

Now as nice as it's seem for beginners, I lean this distro to "Beginner-Intermediate" because of a few things

1. The choice of different desktop environments

2. All of the choices available through the system assistant like Browsers, extra packages, Kernels, Mail, Multimedia etc.

3. Having to manually snapshot before you update so just in case a update breaks something, you can always go back to manual snapshot, even thought every time you do something through the terminal or gui it snapshots it is recommended to create a manual snapshot to be extra safe.

Overall I recommend this distro way more to beginners, compared to other Arch Distros, due to those being more for Intermediate to advanced users.

WOW, I have been a loyal CachyOS user since they first came on the scene. At the time I was a Debian user for years but something was missing so I gave Arch a try. Back then the installer was a nightmare but Endevour and Cachy started making installs easier ( to which now I like doing a vanilla arch install and building the system go figure). I had a weird issue with CachyOS and a Lenovo m725s with a RX 6300 so many issues and I almost gave up. I tried some other Arch distro (endevour, artix, sdesk etc.) none had the same feel out of the box as CachyOS until I tried Garuda again Mokka edition.

Install went fine and fast and once I booted up I was in love with the theme. Felt more like MacOS then windows or linux. Themes could be changed and all the scripts helped just like CachyOS. I ran some benchmarks and was getting the same performance and in some games better. What a distro, I guess the Garuda Dr460nized Gaming edition which was the first one I installed was too much for me. That theme is more than eye candy, its a vomit rainbow. Once I installed Mokka I was home. Now it feels more polished and the scripts are in a way more efficient.

This is a great Arch Distro and I look forward to many years with this.
