Escherichia

Escherichia, a genus of bacteria. Escherichia coli, better known as E. coli, is the most important of the six species of this genus. The name refers to Austrian pediatrician and bacteriologist Theodor Escherich, the first person to publish on the topic (in 1885).

Health and Social Implications

Several different strains of E. coli cause intestinal infections. In particular, enterotoxigenic E. coli can produce a potentially fatal dehydrating diarrhea that is a common cause of disease in travelers. When E. coli infects hospitalized patients, given that they are already in weakened physical health, it can produce the oft-fatal whole-body inflammatory response known as sepsis.
