The Markdown renderer (markdown-it) is currently turning double backslashes into single backslashes, which breaks LaTeX in markdown for multiline environments. See attached picture below.

There aren't any obvious options to toggle in the markdown-it renderer. More investigation is needed, or a new Markdown renderer is needed.
