$\begingroup$ @VF1 You can find a great deal of discussion on LetL if you search this site. This is a macro, a generalization of With. It also uses UpValues in its implementation, b.t.w. So, you were actually looking for "why", rather than for substantial practical examples, it seems, despite the strong emphasis in your question. $\endgroup$
