    $\begingroup$ @zeckra Instead of dealing with geometric models how about defining problem as optimization task and fitting biggest blob or sphere? If I am not mistaken MichaelE2 has related nice solution for 2d circle. $\endgroup$ Commented Aug 27, 2014 at 13:29
