Chapter 5

Billy watched his pen skitter across the page with surprising detachment. Months ago this essay writing process would have caused him unlimited stress. But increasingly ideas were coming to him more easily and he was finding the words were flowing without as much conscious thought. He was on a roll with this essay, which was due at the end of the week. He hoped to knock it off that afternoon and have it ready for Lucy to type it up for him. He still had to admit he was technologically challenged when it came to computers, so Lucy had volunteered to word process his written efforts for him. She is so sweet. He had offered to pay her, but she had just giggled and said that that was one of the few things she could do well…type fast, and that really it was no bother. It never ceased to amaze him how professional his efforts ended up looking once she typed and bound them for him. He kept her well rewarded with quality chocolates and flowers, despite her protests that it really was very easy.

His pen slowed as he came to a difficult section. He rubbed his temples and wondered how he could express what he wanted to concisely. Mr. Wood was always picking up on students rambling in what he called ‘a flurry of arty farty waffling’. Billy knew that to get a good mark he had to avoid saying too much and concentrate on writing a clear and uncluttered account of the development of this particular dramatic convention. Eventually an idea came to him and his pen took off again.

Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted by a cacophony of girly giggling and a pair of hands was over his eyes.

“Guess who?” came the unmistakeable voice of Laura, followed by Lucy’s ever-present high-pitched giggle. “We bought you some lunch,” Laura continued without giving him time to answer.

“Been shopping have you?” Billy smiled when his vision was finally returned to him and he could see the collection of bags the girls had dumped on the table.

“Of course!” Lucy laughed, “It’s what us girls do.”

Billy mused at the vision of them together as Lucy shoved the salad sandwich in front of him in a motherly fashion. Lucy was such a ‘girl’. She wore cute little floral dresses and always had her hair ‘just so’. Laura on the other hand had her own distinctive mode of dressing. Billy called it ‘cultured unkempt’. She might have always looked as though she had been dragged backwards through a bush, but he knew it took her as long to get the dark messy makeup just right. Recently, however, since they had been spending so much time together he had noticed small changes. Lucy had had her ears pierced and Laura’s look wasn’t quite as ‘distressed’. They were slowly having an effect on each other. But it was good they were friends. Lucy was gaining more confidence, and the chip on Laura’s shoulder was slowly disappearing.

“We stopped by the Academy,” Laura began, “I wanted to show Lucy where I’ll be performing next week.”

“Oh yeah, it’s the all-female presentation on Thursday isn’t it? Better make sure I’ve got a night off so I can come and heckle you,” Billy teased as he took another mouthful of his sandwich.

“Billy don’t be gross and talk and eat at the same time,” Lucy chided.

“Anyway,” Laura continued shooting Lucy a meaningful look, “we saw this.” She slid a flyer along the table in front of him.

“Talented actor needed,” Billy read. “Well you’d better pass this on to Elijah.” He pushed the flyer back.

“No, read on,” Laura replied firmly and pushed the piece of paper back.

“Someone with a quiet presence,” Billy quoted, “Yes I see what you mean, that’s not Elijah,” He laughed.

“It’s you,” Laura said simply.

“Don’t be daft!” Billy exploded sending pieces of half chewed carrot across the table, “It’s for a film about a space sniper. Do I look like a space sniper? No I don’t!”

“Yeah but you have a quiet presence Billy, and you’re a talented actor,” Lucy chirped, simply repeating phrases Laura had used.

“I know the guy who’s making this film Billy, and I know what he’s looking for,” Laura continued, “He doesn’t want the archetypal hero in the lead. He wants a guy who has an inner strength, but is vulnerable. Just an ordinary guy doing his job.”

“So I’m an ‘ordinary guy’ now am I?” Billy laughed, “a minute ago I had ‘an inner strength’.”

Laura huffed, “Just call the number Billy,” you’d be better off doing this than slaving away at the fucking printing factory and getting yourself nowhere. This is a real job.”

Billy just kept eating his sandwich and shoved the piece of paper in his back pocket with a grunt. He was simply keeping Laura happy. He knew from experience she would worry away at him like a little black haired terrier.

This is a real job. Yeah right! A ‘real job’ according to his Careers Counsellor was working in a factory, or getting an apprenticeship. He had already pushed the boundaries of that by studying at the Academy. But the best he could do through that was feed his love of theatre and maybe perform in a few productions. He needed the factory job to pay for all that. He was already being self indulgent enough.

“Look girls the sandwich was lovely thank you, but I need to get on with this essay.” Billy shoved the last of his lunch in his mouth and picked up his pen, “I have to have it ready for Lucy the master typist in plenty of time.”

“Mistress Billy, I’m a girl so I would be a mistress,” Lucy said in a deadpan tone.

Billy and Laura shot each other looks and tried not to giggle at the implications of her words.

Hours went by; Billy’s head was down except for when he had to search for another resource. He would thumb through the text, and then stop with an ‘oh yes right’ and then start again. He had no idea of how much time had passed until his concentration was broken by, “So do you have time to eat a pizza with me or do you have to go work at the smelly place?”

“Hey Lij!” Billy grinned, “I have time. I’m not working tonight. The machinery’s down so…” He shrugged his shoulders, “Nothing to do but finish this damn bloody essay off…and eat pizza.”

Elijah slid his arms around Billy and looked over his shoulder, “The conventions one huh? That’s a motherfucker. Wood marks that one hard, ‘cos he hates people waffling.” He added in a pompous voice, “And too many of you get into unnecessary artistic detail. He forgets that theatre is an art sometimes. He turns everything into a fucking history lesson.”

“I’ve tried to keep all that out, but I wouldn’t mind you checking through it. I’ve just got the bibliography to do and I’m done.”

“Yeah sure,” Elijah smiled into Billy’s back,”But at the moment I’ve got an uncontrollable hankering for pizza…and you!”

Billy turned around, a cheeky grin on his face, “Together?”

Elijah laughed, “No! Wouldn’t spoil good pizza!” He teased.

Billy stood up and stretched his back to try and remove some of the knots that had formed after sitting in the one position for so long, “I could do with a walk. Let’s go get food!”

“Fuck yeah! I’m starving! We’ll eat that, I’ll check your essay, and then who knows I might even deign to round off the night with a little bit of Billy Boyd!”

“Little bit!” Billy cried, “You insult me Mr. Wood!”

Elijah wrapped his arms around him, “Hmm! I know! What they say about Scotsmen is all true!” He paused and then added cheekily, “They all have a bad temper!”

“And you Americans are all too loud and crass,” Billy countered.

“Haven’t heard you complaining too much,” Elijah grinned as his hands settled on Billy’s arse and he pulled him in closer.

“Not much to complain about this!” Billy purred as Elijah caressed him.

“Hey! What’s this in your pocket?” Elijah squealed suddenly, “It was part of our agreement that you never have stuff in your jeans so that I was afforded unlimited access!”

“Oh that’s just something the girls brought round…it’s nothing.” Billy squeezed his hand between Elijah and his bum, pulled the piece of paper out, and threw it on the table.

Elijah saw the word ‘actor’ in bold letters at the top, and his uncontrollable curiosity was peaked. He let go of Billy, picked the flyer up and began reading it.

“Dude you should go for this!” He yelled waving the piece of paper in Billy’s face, “It’s made for you!’

“Which ‘part’ is made for me?” Billy raised his eyebrow, ‘quiet presence’ or ‘inner strength’?
Because I’ve just been through this with the girls. You should call Elijah, it asks for a talented actor.”

“That’s why Billy boy this is going straight back in that ass pocket and you are calling tomorrow.” Elijah folded the flyer and slid it back into Billy’s pocket. His hand couldn’t help but remain there, and with a cheeky grin dipped inside the denim to gain contact with bare flesh, “You are talented.” He breathed into his ear before reaching up and covering Billy’s lips with his own.

Billy tried to answer ‘no’, but Elijah’s tongue was in his mouth. He gave in and kissed him back, his tongue fighting with Elijah’s for dominance.

But still the flyer sat, heavy in his pocket.

And he wondered…
