Jun 2, 2010 at 13:14 comment added Nick Gotch I marked this as community wiki when I wrote it back in September '09; still is AFAIK. I got some good answers from it though and it did help me out a lot.
May 30, 2010 at 15:52 comment added George Stocker Voting to close as Subjective and Argumentative; though 'Not a real question' or "This is not Slashdot or Reddit" would have fit too. Great question, just not meant for a Q & A site.

Sep 12, 2009 at 1:29 comment added Kieveli Really though, the management types cannot allow a review without picking something as a 'needs improvement' item. Otherwise you'll realize your own value, and demand more money than they can afford. Estimation is damn hard. Even when you think you have it nailed, you'll switch projects, and your estimates are completely wrong again. Just take it with a grain of salt... and then pad your estimates.

Sep 11, 2009 at 22:17 comment added Nick Gotch @Jason The rest of my performance evaluation was either above average or outstanding and my output usually performs to spec and meets expectations so I'd say my problem is just getting it done in shorter time frames. Planning and estimating my timelines is definitely one issue and lessening distractions/improving focus would also help. Reading lots of good tips for both of these in all the responses.
Sep 11, 2009 at 22:08 comment added Nick Gotch @jmucchiello Things I'm already working on are minimizing distractions and improving my time estimates by planning for "road bumps."

Sep 11, 2009 at 20:21 comment added JasCav I would ask you a follow-up question. Is your desire to be a "faster programmer" a result of your own poor performance (AKA, you need to hone your skills, you need to focus and eliminate distractions (such as SO), etc), or is poor planning from a development standpoint (AKA, you were given 1 week to do something that any sane person would have known would take 1 month). Each item has very different solutions.

Sep 11, 2009 at 15:08 comment added Nick Gotch I'm the sole developer of a few projects and on a small team 2-3 people for a few others. I take the requirements given from the other departments, design, architect, code, and deploy them typically. I try at least using a mind mapper to get things planned out before doing any actual coding & (try to) approach the projects with iterative agile releases. The projects are all in VS 2008 (Silverlight+WPF+LINQ.)
