Of course, at the time I read this book I couldn't really estimate it, but I don't remember having to unlearn anything later. I read it in Russian, though, maybe translators fixed something. I just don't know exactly what it is critisized for, the answer is not very specific.

The book was put in the course reading list and strongly recommended by the TA (who actually knew little Java, and was probably parroting what the professor said) in my university.

What I meant was this book is considered a great one in some universities here. I and thats bad news because thats where people start learning these stuff, and whatever book the professor suggests is considered good. I myself don't like this book.

It follows a narrative style like a tutorial and covers some pretty simple things, and yet does not cover much of the fundamentals of the language in any depth. It also devotes a whole lot of space on the classes in the library like a reference, yet its coverage is far from exhaustive. It is neither a good tutorial nor a any good as a reference. If you like it, good for you. To each his own. But I really don't see anything that's "advanced" java in that book.

Read it after knowing the basics of Java". The "Complete Reference" tag has a great influence on college goers and professors in India.
