so essentially, "invoking subroutines in the calling program" just means 1.)the OS returning the user input to my program and also 2.) the process of getting ready to execute the next function on the stack?

I don't think synchronously responding to a system call is conceptually what's expected by "invoking methods in the calling program". Registering Callbacks and later calling them is more what is expected by the phrase.
