"we can pretty much eliminate the first one as being too limited to use" I thought so to, but that's what Combine uses. I'm sure apple had a good reason for it, so that had me quite surprised.

I haven't yet had the time to look into Combine in more details, but considering how early it is, I wouldn't be surprised if they changed their minds later.
