Bandwidth Selection for Kernel Density Estimation

When we doAre there any heuristics for selecting the bandwidth for kernel density estimation ? In other words, is thea spiky curve better or a smooth ?

. So , while doing density estimation , shall I take small width or large width in consideration one?
