Podfic Year in Review 2019

Stats

I posted 14 podfics this year, including ITPE. 5 of those were collabs.

Longest: I'll Be Your Man, 03:34:30

Shortest: Creation Stories, 10:18

Total time: 11:08:28

Average length: 47 minutes

Additionally, I took part in three multi-voice project.

What was the best podfic you made this year?

coral knuckles (SKZ), hands down. Part of that may just be because I adore the fic itself and it's still fresh on my mind, but I do think it's genuinely one of my best ever performances. It's really different from my usual work, but I loved every second of working on it, and I'm really proud of how it turned out! I should also mention I'll Be Your Man (SVT) here, which suffers a bit from being posted early in the year, but is still one of my favourite works in recent years.

What was the best cover you made this year?

I think that honour will have to go to life comes at you fast (BTS), one of my ITPE gifts. I'm actually surprised with how well it came together, and it didn't even take me that long. I just had to get rid of some text on JK's sweater and then play around with backgrounds until I found one that matched. Special mention goes to Children's Card Games (YOI/YGOTAS), a cover made with the help of an online Yu-Gi-Oh card generator lol.

Personal favourite, for whatever reason?

coral knuckles (SKZ), definitely. It's a podfic I find myself listening to a lot, because I love the story and am really proud of my performance. That said, Here Comes A Thought (SKZ) has a special place in my heart as well. Maybe because it's the first Stray Kids fic I recorded, but also because I'm pleased with how the music fits together, and with Minho's narration.

Most underappreciated?

Nothing is funnier to me than the hits to kudos ratio of coral knuckles (SKZ), I swear. It's probably not fair to call it underappreciated, but part of me still wishes more people would talk to me about it, probably because I'm so excited about it. What can you do. Creation Stories (Craft Sequence) is the one with the actual least amount of attention, but it's gen and for a tiny fandom, so it's not like I actually expected anything.

Most difficult to make?

Nothing that I posted this year was difficult, really. I guess I'll Be Your Man (SVT) is the default answer here just because it took me te longest? But that's really just because of the word count. I have a couple in-progress works that are giving me trouble, but hopefully I'll be able to finish those soon.

Most "ah ha ha I can't believe I'm doing this"?

Children's Card Games (YOI/YGOTAS) was an absolutely hilarious recording experience, so maybe that counts! It was one of the projects we recorded at the first ever europod meet-up, and I have such fond memories of cracking up along with everyone else in the room. Good times. :'D

What's next?

I have a whole bunch of projects in the works that I'm very excited about! That said, my goal for 2020 is to record more femslash. I already posted a TWICE podfic as part of ITPE, but hopefully I can find some more girl group fic to work with. I'll do my best! <3

In 2019 I posted one fic, and it's one I'm really quite proud of: the things I've almost told you (got7, jjp genderswap), the direct sequel to lezgeddit that I somehow tricked myself into writing. It took me over a year to write it, and in some ways it ended up a very personal story. Honestly though, I just love my lesbian daughters and their circle of friends, and I'm incredibly proud of myself for sitting down and finishing this fic. I also wrote porn for the first time! Exciting stuff. :D

Now on to the podfic! I posted 14 of them in 2019, including my ITPE gifts.yay podfic!Collapse )

And that's that! If you read or listened to any of my work in 2019 then I'm very grateful and hope you enjoyed it! Looking forward to another productive year from here on. <3

Podfic Year In Review 2018
Ookami

Stats

I posted 13 podfics this year, including ITPE.

Longest: The MIrror Wheel Eye, 04:30:11

Shortest: new jersey is a punchline, 05:05

Total time: 14:14:52

Average length: 65 minutes

Additionally, I took part in one multi-voice project.

What was the best podfic you made this year?

Looking over everything I posted this year, I'm actually really torn? Still Water (BTS) and The Typical Love Song (NCT) are both strong contenders but in the end the answer should be charmed (BTS). It's a project I spent a lot of time on, and it turned out really well in the end.

What was the best cover you made this year?

can you not (BTS), hands down. It took me forever to photoshop that cloak onto Yoongi, and I also spent forever thinking about whether I was really just gonna use the ace flag as a background, but you know what? The end result makes me super happy. Runner up position goes to stay made of lightning (BTS), a simple cover that worked out really well.

Personal favourite, for whatever reason?

Oh no, this is really difficult. Maybe Still Water (BTS)? I think it's one I'll find myself listening to a lot in the future. It's a kind of story that I haven't really done before, even though I like mysteries a lot, and i'm pleased with how it all turned out - my reading, the music, the cover. Though if we're measuring this by 'how many times did I personally listen to this in 2018', the answer would be either no place I'd rather be (GOT7) or the woodland food bank (DAY6). Then again, maybe that has more to do with how there's barely any podfics (/none at all) by other people in those fandoms.

Most underappreciated?

For some reason I thought charmed (BTS) was a bit underappreciated, but looking at my stats for the year it actually got the most kudos out of everything. XD Perception is weird sometimes - maybe it's just a measure of how proud I really was of this podfic. Looking at the list now I don't think there's anything that was criminally overlooked, some of them just have small audiences in the first place. And in all of my kpop fandoms I really record for myself first and foremost. If other people like it it's a bonus.

On the contrary, a podfic that got a way better reception than I expected was The Typical Love Song. Thanks, NCT fandom. <3

Most difficult to make?

The Mirror Wheel Eye (Naruto) T___T I don't know why, but it gave me so much trouble during recording and editing. Sometimes everything goes smoothly and other times it just doesn't, what can you do.

Most "ah ha ha I can't believe I'm doing this"?

The Typical Love Song (NCT), lol. I swear I didn't notice how sultry my voice got during recording, so while I was editing I got kinda flustered by that. XD Adding the music to can you not? (BTS) probably qualifies as well. The decision to include a video game soundtrack was pretty spontaneous and a lot of fun. I was looking forward to listeners' reactions to it, one song choice in particular. >:D

Biggest learning experience?

There's not really anything big I changed this year, I have my routine by now. Maybe setting up personalized keyboard short cuts for Audacity counts? And I always like to think that I'm slowly getting better at making covers.

What's next?

I have a podfic in the works that I'm VERY excited about - I wanted to finish it last year, but it's taking a bit longer than expected. Other than that I just want to keep filling up the podfic tags for my fandoms that have none or only very few podfics. Be the change you want to see in the world, etc. And hey, maybe I can get some more people to record podfic for them as well. ;D

Fanworks roundup 2018
Ookami
the24thkey
In 2018 I posted 13 solo podfics, 2 fics and 1 vid!

First up: podfic!Collapse )

Next up: fic!

I still don't think of myself as a writer, but sometimes when you enter a fandom you find yourself so overwhelmed with need for a specific trope that it pushes you to new and better things, I guess? ^^'' For me, that trope turned out to be always-a-girl fic, of which there just isn't enough in any kpop fandom. So I wrote some myself!

lezgeddit (DAY6, Jae/Brian) is my baby. My sweet, precious Disaster Lesbians. It started out as a one-off joke on twitter and then turned into something so much more - I can't even begin to tell you how important it is to me personally. I'm still a bit in awe of the fact that I wrote and finished this? But I'm so happy that I did.

I didn't really mean to write more for this 'verse, but I did kinda set up a sequel in the first part (because I just really needed to include a line making fun of JB's hair). I hven't finished that fic (Disaster LEsbians 2 : The Reckoning) just yet, though I'm working on it. hat I did finish and post instead was:

any resemblance unintended (BTS, namjin). I was thinking about how Jin is Gina Linetti, as one does, and then the Justine Seagull scene popped into my head while I was driving one day, and then this fic just...kinda happened. It's basically just 5 Times Jina Trolled Her Girlfriend Before She Finally Noticed, and it was a lot of fun to write about these Distinguished Lesbians.

And finally, I posted another vid for an obscure Asian action movie I watched on an airplane!

I'm still a bit sad that I couldn't find a higher quality video source, because this is a very good-looking movie! But I made do. This was the first time I used Vegas, which took some time getting used to, but I had a good time with it. :D

And that's all for 2018!

Reading style & voice evolution 2012-2018
podfic <3
the24thkey
A while ago I got thinking about how much my voice changed over the last couple of years. Specifically, my reading/performing voice. It's been about 6 years now since I became a podficcer (or rather, since I started posting podfic, since I tried recording stuff for myself quite a bit earlier) and obviously there was a lot of room for improvement - be it in a technical sense or my grasp of the English language.

So I decided to make a compilation of one or two podfics per year (the year of posting, which is not necessarily the year of recording) and see how my reading developed. Not to be like, argh, I should have done this differently, or anything like that, but because I think it's pretty fascinating.

Podfic Year In Review 2017
Ookami

Stats

Once again including my ITPE project, even if it technically belongs in January, I've posted 11 podfics in 2017.

Longest: before things come together, 04:36:18

Shortest: people headin' out for the sun, 09:04

3 collabs

Total time: 09:37:19

Additionally, I took part in two big multi-voice projects.

What was the best podfic you made this year?

before things come together has been very well received, and I am really proud of it. I think it suits my reading style well, and I put a lot of love into it. I'm really glad that people have given it a try even if they're not in BTS fandom!
Somewhat to my own surprise, I realized that They Have Taken Photographs of Our Footprints in the Dust (SW: Rogue One) also counts into 2017's stats. I posted it so early in January that it feels forever ago, but that one is also a strong contender and personal favourite.

What was the best cover you made this year?

I'm still pleased with how the cover for Wheelhouse (Bond movies) came together, so it's either that or the one for SUP, SO SEDUCTIVE (BTS) for the font combination. Both pretty minimalist, but that's what I'm good at. And while I actually made it in 2015 or 2016 (I think), I've always been very pleased with the cover I made for While Recognizing the Importance of Luck in Certain Situations, Eve Genoard Continues to Disapprove of Gambling (Baccano!)

Personal favourite, for whatever reason?

SUP, SO SEDUCTIVE (BTS) is up there among my favourite things I've ever made, I love it SO MUCH. I'm super proud of it, too. I don't usually do straight-up PWPs, but I think it came out really well and hopefully pretty hot. Also it's hilarious, and I always love the funny ones best. pack off the sunset glow (SEVENTEEN) is a late but strong contender for that very reason.

Most underappreciated?

While Recognizing the Importance of Luck in Certain Situations, Eve Genoard Continues to Disapprove of Gambling (Baccano!), one of my collabs with Rhea. Then again, the Baccano fandom is like, 3 people, and that already includes Rhea and me. I was also expecting a bit more for i want you (really, i mean really) (BTS) because, well. It's a really cute and funny coffee shop au? But in general BTS fandom has been absolutely wonderful to me and my work, so I really can't complain.

Most difficult to make?

Down River Road (Haikyuu!!) gave me some trouble because the voices didn't quite work out the way I wanted them to, and before things come together (BTS) was a struggle because I had only just gotten into kpop and the Korean names were really difficult. I did my best, though!
That aside I'm actually really pleased with everything I've posted this year and I feel like I've improved a lot in a couple of ways. I'm trying to become less of a perfectionist, and as a consequence I've become a lot faster at editing. Most of my recent podfics have an incredible turn around time from when I started recording to the date of posting, and even They Have Taken Photographs of Our Footprints in the Dust was completed within 8 days.

Most "ah ha ha I can't believe I'm doing this"?

SUP, SO SEDUCTIVE (BTS), definitely. I mean, it's lingerie porn. I did something really silly with the music. And just the recording experience was very weird. I read the fic shortly after it was first posted, laughed my ass off, asked for permission and then recorded and posted it in two days, laughing even more throughout the entire thing. Again, pack off the sunset glow (SEVENTEEN) is a runner up for how it had me belting out songs at 9 PM, hoping really, really hard that our downstairs neighbours wouldn't be able to hear me.

Biggest learning experience?

All my kpop podfics, in general. I'm already working on a base level of two languages with any podfic I record, English and German, and adding Korean to that, even if it's just names, was pretty difficult. More so than with anime fandoms, because I can at lest speak Japanese, too. Also, hearing peoples' actual singing and speaking voices as much as I did with the amount of kpop videos I watched, it was surprisingly difficult to find some character voices. I didn't really have that problem back in bandom, but then I didn't watch nearly as many interviews etc. back then.

What's next?

A weirdly competitive part of me wants to record enough podfic for one or two fandoms that they overtake hockey on my AO3 profile, hah. I have a couple projects I'm currently working on that I'm very excited about, and some vague plans for future podfics. And I want to record some more collabs! I finally hit 50 podfics in 2017, so I wonder what next year will bring. Probably not 100, but maybe 80? We'll see. ;D

Podfic Year In Review 2016
podfic <3
the24thkey
I haven't posted all the podfics I made here on dreamwidth yet, buuuuuuut let's do this thing first! Including all the ITPE things even if they only got posted today.

Stats

I posted 21 podfics in 13 fandoms in 2016. Total length: 13:19:37

Out of those 11 were collabs.

Longest podfic: The Sea and Stars Are Yours My Dear, 03:30:09.

Shortest podfic: Two Monks Invent Fandom, 00:05:46

2 ITPE main gifts, 8 treats.

What was the best podfic you made this year?

I am really happy with every podfic I made in 2016, tbh, so this is a bit difficult. But in the end, it might still be The Sea And Stars Are Yours My Dear (Dishonored), which I posted all the way back in January. I spent a lot of time on it and am very proud of how it turned out. There's a very specific tone or atmosphere to it, half eerie, half hilarious, and yet it felt very easy to record. And as I noticed again when I more recently recorded in a mundane universe (time to bring out the menacing voice, to quote myself) doing the Outsider is always fun! Even if I have to say 'My dear Corvo' 5 million times to get into his voice.

What was the best cover you made this year?

This year I finally learned to install fonts, and it definitely shows in my ITPE covers. XD The cover I made for A Loyal Fan (Yuri On Ice) is probably my favourite, and definitely the most ambitious one I attempted so far. I'm not sure it works 100%, but it's a start! I'm also rather fond of the more minimalist cover for no room for pretend (Haikyuu).

Most underappreciated?

I honestly did not expect any of my Haikyuu podfics to receive much attention, but as it turns out, the Haikyuu fandom is really great and appreciative? It made me really happy! Still, KUNIMI, SOBS WHISPERER (Haikyuu) might be the answer here, simply because I love it so much and want everyone to listen to it! Oh well. It is a rare pairing, I guess.

Personal favourite, for whatever reason?

KUNIMI, SOBS WHISPERER (Haikyuu). I love it SO MUCH. I have never laughed so much while recording/editing something. And if I may, I think my comedic crying is really quite good. :3 Similarly I also really like Hedge Your Bets (Ace Attorney, endless plant jokes). What can I say, I love crack fic.

Most difficult to make?

While the editing for most of my ITPE projects went very easily, Shrapnel (FMA) just had to be difficult. Or maybe it's just because it was the last project I had left to edit and I was tired, who knows. On the performance side, my part in Through Other Eyes (Dishonored) was rather challenging because the POV character uses they/their pronouns and also has slightly jumbled speech patterns - I hope it turned out okay!

Most “ah ha ha I can’t believe I’m doing this”?

KUNIMI, SOBS WHISPERER (Haikyuu), which was a very spontaneous idea and which I finished in like, a week. And then there's the, uh, alternative cover I made for here on the roof of the world (Yuri On Ice) and which you can view here. I'm really sorry. It's all fishpatrol and Hananobira's fault. :P

Most fun to make?

I did so many collabs, both in person and over skype, and they're always so much fun. <3 Aside from those, I'll have to point back up to my favourites! Hedge Your Bets (Ace Attorney) especially was fun to do because it gave me an excuse to point my finger dramatically and yell OBJECTION!

Was there one that didn’t turn out the way you wanted?

Nope, I don't think so! Which is a pretty great feeling, ngl. There's definitely room for improvement, but I'm happy with where I'm at.

Biggest learning experience?

Nothing really stands out in my memory, but then I'm not a particularly adventurous podficcer, hah. Maybe my attempts at being more ambitious with my cover art count!

What’s next? Do you have any podfic goals for next year?

I'd say 'make it to 50 works', but I'm pretty sure that's doable. ;D I do want to record more Haikyuu podfic, some Rogue One things maybe, and then there's two big projects that I've been thinking about for a while now...we'll see. :3

Haikyuu!! podfics!
Ookami
the24thkey
In a display of productivity unprecedented outside of ITPE, I just finished 3 podfics in 2 weeks. Granted, two of those have been almost ready for ages, while the last one is super short. But still! Go me.

All of them are for Haikyuu!!, the sports anime of my heart, love of my life. Definitely planning on recording more of them.

cover

no room for pretend
(Iwaizumi/Oikawa), orphaned work. Somehow these two dorks ended up my most favourite pairing??? I am highly emotional about them and I love them and I require ten million more fics for them at the very least. This one is a most excellent fake dating story, which is always a tricky trope for me. With any given fake dating fic, I will either love it with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, or I will have to stop reading two paragraphs in because I can't handle it. IDK. It's weird. Anyway, with this fic it was obviously option number one!

I think this is an AU setting (b/c of the mentions of Suga and Ushiwaka and, well, the lack of Volleyball), but only a very slight one. Now that I think about it, using pics of them in their school stuff is maybe a bit misleading, since they're older here. Oh well. *shrugs* I still like the cover.

It's not as obvious here as it is in KUNIMI, SOBS WHISPERER, but I think I did a lot more...performing, I guess, with Oikawa's dialogue than I usually do. I'm not that good at doing voices, so I usually don't put too much thought into it, but here it felt kind necessary. I'm not sure how much of it is Oikawa's seiyuu in the anime or just my own character interpretation, but I always think of him as someone who very carefully chooses how to project himself in most situations, and I wanted to show that somehow.

Anyway, the podfic runs 01:47:20 and you can find it on AO3.

cover

i put my hand out, unfolded, into the sunlight by carafin (Akaashi/Bokuto) is so, so lovely. I mean, it has magic realism and Bokuto discovering his love of baking and the rest of Fukurodani being very long-suffering - what more do you want? And the narration feels very Akaashi, A+++.

This was pretty much finished for a long time before I finally posted it because I was unsure what to do about the fact that I kinda mispronounce Bokuto's name. <.<'' In the end it just feels way more comfortable to say it the way I did, so I decided against rerecording the entire thing. I hope it's not too distracting!

It's 32:41 and you can find it on the AO3.

cover

Ahaha, so. Recording KUNIMI, SOBS WHISPERER by psidn (Kindaichi/Kunimi pre-slash) was something of an impulsive decision. This story is the crack I never knew I wanted. Kunimi. Kindaichi. Lots of crying over TV dramas. Oikawa being a petty little shit. Fuck, I love it. I also never had more fun while recording something - I was just laughing at my own over-the-top performance all through recording and editing. And here you can probably really tell what I meant about Oikawa's voice. I had so much fun with that, omg.

There are very few clear official pics of Kunimi, but in all of them he looks incredibly done with everything. It's pretty amazing.

Please check this podfic out, I am so happy with how it turned out. :DDD It runs 13:34 and is here on the AO3.
