One of the things we did on our site was to modify twiki to use WebPreferences/webicon.gif, with the default coming from TWiki/TWikiPreferences/webicon.gif This way the icon used in the top left can be overridable by each area owner.

Presumably this should be done as one of the TWikiVariables? This is definitely useful, and was one of the first things I did on setting up TWiki. Unfortunately the robot from Buck Rogers is not really the image we wanted for a corporate intranet site

Yup, that would have been better. I'd go for a combination thereof, so that the variable gives the location but the default location is on those pages.
