Isn't that more a feature of certain text editors instead of Unix in general? I'm not aware of a file system that saves old versions of files that way.

@Joey You are correct but I had completely forgotten that my trusty emacs does this and catsat's answer (in conjunction with your comment) did save my bacon on this occasion.
