  • If changing GRUB_GFXMODE has an effect on Linux display mode, it suggests the "native" framebuffer display driver is not activating for whatever reason, the default (usually EFI or VESA) framebuffer driver is being used instead, and for some hardware/firmware-specific quirk it only works well with specific resolutions only. Finding out why the appropriate native framebuffer driver is not activating and fixing that would probably provide better display performance and the ability to change display modes in Linux.
