  • This means that ${str//@($'\xB3')/w} should be able to replace just the last (UTF-8) byte of (\xB3) with the string w (\x77), and it does! Also, ${str//*($'\xB3')/w} should result in 77e0 77a4 77, and it does! .. Thanks James. So, this would mean that in the answer, it should read There are zero instances of Unicode character 0001 between each of the input bytes (not characters). Commented Feb 19, 2012 at 9:55
