i want the page to be called blog, and I want to be able to customize the type of posts that display on page while maintaining commenting, etc. home.php is already in use as it serves as a home page.

@JohnMerlino then don't set that page as the page for posts. you're doing your own query anyway. i'm not entirely clear on your site structure and in what context you're using home.php if you're also setting the page for posts.
