Le Code One a été inventé, en 1992, par Ted Williams de LaserLight Systems2.
 
bulletLe Code 1 est de longueur variable. 
Il peut contenir jusqu'à :
 
bullet2'218 caractères alphanumériques ou
bullet3'550 caractères numériques.
 
 
bulletIl permet d'imprimer beaucoup d'information sur une très petite surface :
500 caractères alphanumériques sur 1.6 cm2.
 
bulletIl utilise un réseau de barres horizontales et verticales traversant le centre du symbole. Il permet la représentation de données binaires et ASCII et comporte un mécanisme de correction d'erreur. 
 
bulletLe Code One s'articule autour de 8 tailles, du Code 1A au Code 1H.
Le Code 1A permettant la représentation de 13 caractères alphanumériques ou de 22 digits alors que le Code 1H peut contenir 2'218 caractères alphanumériques ou 3'550 digits. 
 
bulletLe symbole peut se présenter sous diverses formes, rectangle, forme de T, de U ou de L.
