Portrait of the Artist as a Small Fish

What's New?

I like these colors. They're not that hard to read, are they? Some people want everything...well, it's my page, nyah! :-) The fish graphic is being odd-- worked in Netscape 1.x, but seems to have broken in 2.0. In my copious spare time, I'll get to it, but thanks for letting me know...

Have I ever been one to leave well enough alone? Of course not. Someday I should post some of my classic flames-which-enlighten from the Elbows era. For now, I am called out of early retirement most urgently by John Perry Barlow's recent "A Declaration of Cyberspace Independence". Quoted in its entirety in my essay of today, A Refutation of Cyberspace Independence

I hate the Communications Decency Act (sometimes called the Telecomm Reform Act) as much as anyone else, but just couldn't let Barlow's "Declaration" pass. The man has done much good for cyberspace, but everyone misses the mark now and then...

More poetry, an update on life and, by popular demand, a response to the question, "who are you, anyway?". Apparently some web crawler has been indexing my pages so I've been getting visits from intrigued strangers who want to know more about me. Well, um, okay, I guess. Why not?.

Set up some simple email form stuff for Adventure Sports , the folks I've been taking kayaking lessons from. The Scruznet forms handler is okay, but annoying. We did an info request form and a staff email batcher.

I finally got around to unpacking and installing PGP 2.6.2. Here's my public key. You can also check the MIT-AI key server.

Words to live by-- was Suzanne Vega precepting the last few weeks of traffic on the www-buyinfo list, or Marcus' latest post to firewalls?

Close to the middle of the network,
It seems we're looking for a center.
What if it turns out to be hollow?
We could be fixing what is broken.
[S. Vega, Big Space]

Preparing for the move to Santa Cruz on 1 October; the startup fizzled due to logistics and some issues between two of the other founders, so I bowed out and am concentrating on building tools. Working on an 11 Oct deadline for a major client, and trying to have a life as well-- taking a Monday night comedy improv class up in the city with a friend. Had a royal blast at Burning Man. Been having fun lately as my alter ego, Dr. Obnoxious. And other than that, all quiet on the western front-- cats made it through spaying just fine, network's been staying up, and I dug my aluminum baseball bat out of the closet in case the peninsula rapist comes to call.

Tonight's little project was the dry run of the parasphere project, to be put up at BurningMan this year. Didn't quite go as expected, but I had an idea on a reconfig. Parasphere transmutation, ho!

A visit to the Exploratorium after hours to play with Movietalk yielded a Quicktake GIF, completely unrelated to the purpose of the visit. It now adorns this page, above. For those who just can't get enough of downloading, here's the full-screen version.

Go check out the Multimedia Playground there while it's still up! Only until March 12th, so get yourself down there or wait a whole year until MMP 96!

Snark and Boojum 's homepages, including some thoughts on the art & science of kitten-taming.

Watch this space for CyberOtter's Offical World Wide Web Guide to DEATH , coming soon. An exercise in tautological secular philosophy guaranteed to intrigue everyone and annoy many...

Here are lots of web technology bookmarks that I collected during a marathon surf recently. Unorganized, of course, but possibly interesting to various folks. There's a lot of *stuff* out there...

Following the grand tradition of constructing pages from the top down so that folks can see the new stuff right away: the device which I will be submitting for registration to the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). It merely contains a pair of 7K GIF files as 3-color inlined images, so it should be quickly visible on even a 19200 slip connection.
