Citizen Kane: A Filmmaker's Journey Hardcover – April 26, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
“This book is a gold mine for fans.”―Kirkus Reviews
It is the story of a film masterpiece―how it was created and how it was almost destroyed.
It is the celebration of brilliant achievement and a sinister tale of conspiracy, extortion, and Communist witch hunts.
It is the chronicle of a plot orchestrated in boardrooms and a mountaintop palace, as a media company that claimed to stand for “genuine democracy” defied the First Amendment and schemed to burn Hollywood’s greatest creation.
Citizen Kane: A Filmmaker’s Journey is the extraordinary story of the production of Orson Welles’ classic film, using previously unpublished material from studio files and the Hearst organization, exclusive interviews with the last surviving members of the cast and crew, and what may be the only surviving copies of the “lost” final script.
Harlan Lebo charts the meteoric rise to stardom of the twenty-three-year-old Orson Welles, his defiance of the Hollywood system, and the unprecedented contract that gave him near-total creative control of his first film. Lebo recounts the clashes between Welles and studio executives eager to see him fail, the high-pressure production schedule, and the groundbreaking results. Lebo reveals the plot by the organization of publisher William Randolph Hearst to attack Hollywood, discredit Welles, and incinerate the film. And, at last, he follows the rise of Citizen Kane to its status as the greatest film ever made.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm glad I jumped on ordering this after I read an article about it. It's such a readable book even when it goes into detail about the soundstage numbers and studio location (which I love). The author even does a nice job discussing the technical details of Gregg Toland's incredible cinematography.
One of the great things the author does is lay out the landscape of how Welles got such a carte blanche contract and the risk RKO took on him. There's a lot about studio politics that is really illuminating about that era in Hollywood.
This book is packed with facts and not over written. I will be tracking down other books by the writer.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2016I don't care how many books or articles you've read on Orson Welles or the movie "Citizen Kane," this is a must-read for anyone interested in film history and/or the creative process. Harlan Lebo has, in my opinion, written the definitive work on "Kane" and filmmaker Welles. Both the movie and the man are American classics. I initially found this book on the new non-fiction shelf at the public library. I borrowed it and, after looking it over, immediately returned it because I wanted to own the book for my Kindle. This happens when I discover a "keeper," I purchased the electronic book from Amazon that very day and the Kindle formatted volume matches the printed book word-for-word and has all the photographs, which display nicely on my PaperWhite. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in films and film-making.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2016This is a nice addition to the recent crop of books on Welles; the author doesn't get in the way of his facts and he does a good job putting this film in its historical context.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseFantastic. If you bought the 1991 50th Anniversary VHS boxset and enjoyed the coffee table book back then, you should not hesitate to purchase this book. This work is everything the older book couldn't be-- there's so much more of the story behind this movie, its release, and aftermath. And to top it all off, it doesn't just read like dry information, like some other authors of these types of books tend to write. Lebo's text is entertaining and smooth to read. And he doesn't present a biased view, being very fair in regards to Orson, Mankeweicz, and even Houseman. This is a fine book.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2017Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseFinally, the definitive account of the making of CITIZEN KANE! Superbly researched, amply documented, and an absolute pleasure to read. Quite literally, a page-turner that tracks the genesis of this classic film on a day-by-day basis with meticulous attention to detail. I learned something new on just about every page even though I have studied and taught this film for decades.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI once took an entire quarter course at UCLA Fil School on this incredible motion picture. The author gives us a rare and thorough background on the making of the film as well as a valuable insight on the 25 year-old genious who transformed the way movies are made. Fascinating and well-researched, this is a must buy for film buffs EVERYWHERE!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017I've read a lot about the making of this film, and seen the two hour documentary with the DVD but there's a lot here I've never heard before. A fun read.
