My children have the default keyboard on the Nexus 7 tablets, and it drives me nuts when I have to fix something. Especially not being able to long press for number but having to switch to a different keyboard entirely. Of course, it's still easier than inputting a 64-bit WPA2 passcode into a Nest thermostat. :-)

However, I also use the default Android keyboard on my Nexus 4 (Android 4.2) and this works great also. I particularly like the swipe input (new with 4.2) which is awesome. However, I don't think recommending another keyboard is necessarily a desirable solution in this instance where there does appear to be a genuine problem. (I didn't downvote you btw.)
