GLONASS (Globalnaya navigatsionnaya sputnikovaya sistema, Global Navigation Satellite System) is a satellite navigation system operated by the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces. It acts as an alternative/complimentary system to the USA's Global Positioning System. Many smartphone GPS receivers also incorporate GLONASS capability and can use both GPS and GLONASS to improve accuracy.
