- Since the asker tagged his question with "multibit-hd", it may be worth noting that Multibit also follows BIP44 and uses the same gap limit of 20.Murch– Murch ♦2017-01-09 14:56:12 +00:00Commented Jan 9, 2017 at 14:56
- 1@Murch It seemed to me that OP wanted to know how it works in general and just stated an example HD wallet. Anyways, regarding Multibit HD: In their gap limit explanation, they refer to BIP 44 and then link to this paragraph which states: "Address gap limit is currently set to 20. If the software hits 20 unused addresses in a row, it expects there are no used addresses beyond this point and stops searching the address chain. - Yes, that's the same page that I've linked to. The information should be added to the answer though, because probably the asker was interested in Multibit, or they wouldn't have added the tag after adding the more generic [deterministic] and [hd-wallet]. ;)Murch– Murch ♦2017-01-09 15:02:26 +00:00Commented Jan 9, 2017 at 15:02
- Just to check my understanding, should the '28' in this answer read '26' ?Crypto L Plate– Crypto L Plate2025-02-25 19:47:08 +00:00Commented Feb 25 at 19:47
- @CryptoLPlate No. Why would addresses number 26 and 27 get checked a second time?UTF-8– UTF-82025-03-03 15:05:04 +00:00Commented Mar 3 at 15:05

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. bitcoin-core), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
