\$\begingroup\$ "Add 4 bytes if I have to allow both integers and strings representing integers" You don't, it is optional to choose either, but probably 99.9% will choose integer. I mainly added it for the rare languages that only support strings, but I will remove that part from my question since almost every language does. \$\endgroup\$
