Guyz,

Lets start guessing the pass percentage....

What can be the factors affecting the pass percentage???

I can think of the following:

--> This is an exam for newbies to the java technology

--> The percentage of people that Sun intends to pass out(among all the test givers)

--> The pass percentage they set, does it encourage more newbies to take the exam?

--> How the questions will be selected for evaluation, I mean there were similar questions from the same topic. I think 1 or 2 questions from each such set will be selected unless it is something unique.

--> All other Java exams by Sun are less than 70%

Keeping all these in view, my guess is between 65% to 70%

Lets see what you guys have to say....

I think it will be low, too low .. my guess is 55%.

And It's cheating to pick a range So pick a specific number please.

My Guess range is 55% - 60% .
The lucky number i am thinking is 58%.

I would perfer the passing rate is high, like 70+%. However, seems to me that SCJA would be 65%.

Like Nick, I think the passing rate should be high so that we can determine that a candidate is really qualified in Java technology in a broad aspect. Since this exam is not part of the Java certification path of Sun, it would not be a big deal, even the passing score is high.

IMO, the official passing score might be between 60% and 70%.

I think the pass rate will be at least 65% judging from the feedback, but I doubt it will exceed 70%, so 65 - 70

I'm going to take a stab and say low 60's, maybe tending towards 65%. Just seems like that would probably be a good range to be assured that there's some proficiency, without being too hard.

The real question, though, is going to be how the curves' affected by non-newbies taking the test...

I think this test like any other test is a test for a set of knowledge...

Whether a newbie or an experiened person it is the test for the same knowledge, the only thing that varies is one might need more preperation and other might not..

Said so, I feel that the curve will not be affected by non-newbies taking the test but certainly the fact that the target market for this test being newbies will affect the pass percentage.

Passing score is not an indicator on the exam quality: High passing scores doesn't men that a passing examinee is very capable since low passing score (65 for example) means very few people get (80+ for example).
There are minimum requirements that if someone meet, Sun consider him adaquately capable for the published knowkedge.

CCNA passing score is approx 80+ and this doesn't mean it's harder than Java Programmer exam.

The range for previous SCJP exams is 52-61%. This exam is geared at professionals with LESS skill than an SCJP. With that in mind I'm guessing 52%.

SCJA exam touches all areas of Java technologies. So, If some one is very strong in core java and OO methodology they can easily pass the exam with out knowing much of other Java technologies.

Therefore, the pass percentage should be little high 70% to 75%. [OR] They have to make 60% in each category of the exam and bring it to consolidated pass percentage of 60%.

70%+ because it's so easy.
if the exam is easy, and passing score is low then it has not value anymore.
