Holidays are normally 24th, 25th , 31st December and 1st January.
Holiday Season on the other hand is from November 28th to January 1st. No one gets an entire month off.. but its the build up to Christmas and New Year and is hence termed as Holiday Season.

"Happy Holidays" is so you can wish people "Merry Christmas" without offending them if they aren't Christian.

This is my pet peeve. I say "Merry Christmas". Even if the person is not a Christian there is no reason for them to be offended.
What if the person is an athiest and doesn't celebrate any holiday? In that case is "Happy Holidays" offensive? Should I say "wishes for your general happiness" instead so that I don't offend anyone? What a bunch of politically correct BS!
No matter who you are, December 25th is Christmas; it even says so on the calender. So I wish you a Merry Christmas. If you don't like it, you can screw.

Happy Holidays =
Merry Christmas
Happy New Year
Happy Hanukah
Happy Winter Solstice
and a couple of other holidays as well that occur around this time of the year.
