Hi,
I just started studying for SCJP a couple of days back and I am planning to take up the exam some time in august.
I read about the cattle drive.I had a couple of questions.
Other than assignments do we get a chance to work on any java projects to get some hands on experience if we register?
How long will it take to complete the course?
can any one answer to my questions?
thanks in advance
bani

No

It depends a lot on you and how much time you're willing to invest. And some depends on how busy the nitpickers are.

Hi bani and welcome to JavaRanch.
For the Cattle Drive you have assignments only. To get experience on "real" Java projects you'd have to look somewhere else - sometimes there's something posted in the Conventions/Training/User Groups forum. Maybe a search through that forum would get you some links to possible project work.
How long it takes to finish the Cattle Drive depends on many different factors so it's not possible to give a definite time. Some people get through quickly, others less quickly.
Mostly it depends on how much time you can dedicate to doing the assignments. Then you have to figure that the nitpickers (the ones who guide you along to an acceptable version of each assignment) sometimes have a lot of students, are busy at work and other things that demand their time, too. How much programming experience you have can play a role too.
There's no deadlines for passing in assignments so you go at your own pace. The early assignments generally take less time, but once you hit the first tough ones it can slow down a bit.
You're free to do assignments without sending them in for nitpicking too.
Check out these two pages for the details and come back and ask if you have more questions.

Best of luck on the SCJP!

Typing at the same time as Marilyn.
So there's your answer in both succinct and verbose forms!
Does that mean we're twins?
