My question is that i am not able to access the array at a given index using EL.
I am able to print the array and i get the expected result but i end up in this exception only when i try to access an array at a given index.

Please help me on this

Please be sure to use code tags when posting code to the forums. Unformatted code is extremely hard to read and many people that might be able to help you will just move along to posts that are easier to read. Please read this for more information.

You can go back and change your post to add code tags by clicking the button on your post.

First of all, you are mixing the EL and scriptlets? Why? Using both is a mess and bound to lead to problems.

Either choose to use the JSTL and EL, or choose to use scriptlets (not recommended), but not both.

And why are you doing this in a bean rather than under the control of a page controller servlet? Are you not using a Model 2 web application structure?

This error:

javax.el.PropertyNotFoundException: Property '0' not found on type java.lang.String

means that what you think is an array is actually a string.

Also, are you keeping an open connection in the application context?!

I guess yes.. I thought i would have to initialize the DB connection every time.. Would keeping an open connection hit on the performance of the application ?

What else can i do that would enable me to create a reusable DB connection object ?

Use a connection pool. By keeping an open connection you're basically putting a hard limit on the number of users.
