I've always worked full time and not experienced with contracting. Now I may have some opportunities for "W2 contracts". The job description indicates benefits (medical, vision, dental, 401k). But it fails to mention if vacation, sick time and paid holidays is included. Is vacation usually part of a W2 contract benefit package just like full time?

I can only speak from my experience... the place I work right now, somedays it is slow and I can come in at 10am and leave at 4:30-5pm and take a 2hr lunch in between or even work remotely, then there are other times when I have to work 14hrs straight and also through the weekend..this is usually the time of release/certification period when the pressure is there to take care of issues quickly so the deadline doesn't slip ;-) In the end I guess it's a wash overall so I wouldn't say it's long hrs.

55k is about $3200 take home monthly here in California if you're single.

Places like LA are very expensive to live. Expect to spend $1400/mo. in rent+utilities, probably another $500-600 in other expenses at a minimum including food, insurance, transporation, misc. etc.

$1000/mo. saving should be possible if you're careful with your money. Good luck!
