the key_buffer_size only affects MyISAM (key buffer caches index pages from MYI files).

It just so happens that @Mike asked the exact same question in ServerFault (serverfault.com/questions/272337/…) I suggested the same thing regarding tmp_table_size. At least, you found a doc verifying this possibility. Your other thoughts seem reasonable to me. +1 for you !!!
