We had the drain in our basement back up recently, so had in a plumber to clear out some roots and they used a camera to capture a video of the line out to the city system.

We've been in the house for about 10 years. I think we had to do this once early on, but this is the first time in a while with this issue. The pipe is clay tile for basically the whole section our property (with I think the first six feet or so coming out of the house being cast iron).

The plumber is recommending getting a lining done because of the misalignments and issues they're seeing. I’m wondering if it's something that needs to be done now and if lining is the best option in this case. The worst sections are probably at about 45 feet (1:20 of video) and 13 feet (2:30).

  • My $.02: I owned a 1950s home with almost the same situation. I regularly augured it myself with a rental tool after paying a sloppy "rooter" service to do it the first time. I also had clay tile misalignment and whatever. As long as you keep the roots in check (via mechanical or chemical means), it may work indefinitely. Who can say what shifting is in store for the tile? Commented Jul 29 at 1:56

You basically have three options.

  • Dig it up and replace it.
  • Lining
  • Do nothing

If you do nothing it will get blocked again regularly (maybe every 5 years)

The other two options give basically the same result (you get a new plastic sewer pipe), but lining is less disruptive (less digging) and less expensive.

  • Yes. If you had roots grow in through the gaps in the pipe, they'll only come back. Get SIPP or CIPP lining done now. Commented Jul 29 at 11:52
