Has anyone been able to make the inline LaTeX equation delimiter work?? I pulled the following example right from the advanced editing help example, and the LaTeX just won't happen!

The Gamma function satisfying $\Gamma(n) = (n-1)!\quad\forall n\in\mathbb N$ is via through the Euler integral

I see a couple of Completed Tags for this, like enter link description here, but it's still a problem, at least in chrome 22.0.1229.94

The inline delimiter is \$ on this site since just the $ delimiter creates havoc with anything that has prices in it. Last time I checked, we're the only site that does things this way, so they aren't going to change the help text for us.

\$\Gamma(n) = (n-1)!\quad\forall n\in\mathbb N\$

\$\Gamma(n) = (n-1)!\quad\forall n\in\mathbb N\$

  • \$\begingroup\$ Adding a backslash \ to $ works for me in EE, but adding ( and ) doesn't work. \$\endgroup\$ Commented Aug 29, 2024 at 23:51
  • \$\begingroup\$ @LeonChang The parenthesis options aren't enabled due to markup requirements, see electronics.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/5984/… \$\endgroup\$ Commented Aug 30, 2024 at 3:21
  • \$\begingroup\$ In LaTeX and in MathJax as I have always known them, a dollar sign works as a delimiter for inline math notation, and WITHIN the LaTeX or MathJax code a dollar sign preceded by a backslash causes an actual dollar sign to appear in the rendered image. Why can't it be done that way here? And how do you make a dollar sign appear in the rendered image if the control sequence normally used for that is used instead as a delimiter? \$\endgroup\$ Commented Mar 15 at 13:49
  • \$\begingroup\$ Randomly adding Mathjax to answers with two prices in it was not a good user experience for new users as well as the community members who needed to fix it. Dollar signs are easy - just put them in your control sequence without a delimiter. \$\endgroup\$ Commented Mar 16 at 3:06

I keep this meta post favorited so I can refer back to how the EE.SE site likes it's MathJax:

\$\begingroup\$ I thought mathjax also suggested something like \$ and SE just chose $ because they did not envision a site with prices, it made our site look like hell. \$\endgroup\$ Commented Oct 24, 2012 at 13:29

\$\begingroup\$ @Kortuk I don't know the history of SE's implementation of MathJax. But according to the MathJax documentation: "the single dollar signs are not enabled by default because they are used too frequently in normal text, so if you want to use them for math delimiters, you must specify them explicitly". So you're right. There defiantly was a conscious decision to implement the single dollar sign delimiter. \$\endgroup\$ Commented Oct 24, 2012 at 15:10
