Modern code is boring.

The engineer in me finds more enjoyment creating things that run closer to the machine, without modern abstraction. Therein lies a unique advantage to understanding the unchanged building blocks of today's software.

Anyone can build things on the back of high level frameworks and libraries, but not everyone could tell you how it actually works. Luckily, this distinction usually doesn't matter.
