How does Age of Empires II generate random maps?

How does Age of Empires II generate random maps? Which algorithms does it use? If it's noise-based, what heuristics does it use to map value intervals to terrain types?

I remember the AoE2 map type "The Unknown" advertised "100,000 possible maps", which I presume implies a seed of 0-99,999. How does it use the seed when it's making the map?
