What it means when choosing a "dpi" when exporting a pdfPDF map in arcgisArcGIS?

Sorry for the not perfectly english

TryingI'm trying to understand something when exprotingexporting map as pdf filePDF file in esri's arcgisEsri's ArcGIS for desktopsDesktop.

  1. The abbilityability to choose papperpaper size.

  2. The abbilityability to choose dpiDPI.

Thought that those are printer parameters. Supposly WhenSupposedly when I export a map to the computer the only parameters whom need to set are paper ratio and pixel number for choosenchosen ratio.

BeforBefore exporting I will check if my screen can handle this amount of pixels on this ratio (ppiDPI and screen size) and my printer with this amounts of dots on a given paper size (dpiDPI).

So dpiDPI and paper size are properties of the printer not of the pdfPDF file itself.

Thanks in advanced for the answers!
