    Beautiful work! just found this today and used it for recreating the day/night cycle of a fantasy world I'm building with my siblings. I learned two things while doing this. 1). if you replace gamma with tan(l_a) you can then specify the exact height (in latitude) you want the geodesic to reach. 2). if you instead replace gamma with tan(y_1)*csc(x_1 - l_0) you will get a curve that will go through a specified point!
