Node translation issue

Hi,

I’m working with an ‘imperfect’ geometry, which currently meshes and solves correctly. However, I’d like to introduce additional imperfection by translating the two transverse T-profiles in the positive Z-direction and adjusting the surrounding geometry accordingly. I’ve illustrated this concept in the bottom two figures attached.

The challenge is that this translation affects the overall coordinates of the model, and I’ve encountered limitations with several approaches:

• Compute all new coordinates and using NMODIF after meshing returns an error: "Node _ is attached to keypoint _ and cannot be altered."
• Compute all new coordinates and using KMODIF before meshing fails due to keypoints being shared among multiple lines, causing coons patches
• Applying translations using D displaces the nodes but also fixes them, which is not suitable since most nodes should remain free to move under loading

I’m wondering if there’s a recommended way to implement this type of translation, or whether a different modelling philosophy would be better suited as what I ask is not possible in the current setup

Hi @sjorskremer
You could use modmsh,detach to detach the FEM from the CAD. Then you are free to edit individual node positions as you want. I'd create node/element components from meshed CAD if needed for later i.e. for applying a load etc.
