I have started getting "You have reached your monthly limit ..." in Visual studio. I got one on 17/09/2025 telling me that I could wait until 18/09/2025. I waited until 22/09/2025, and now I get a message saying that I have reached my monthly limit, and I can wait until 18/10/2025.

Why can I no longer use Copilot? I have updated to the latest Visual Studio and have signed out and back in again to GitHub, but no change.

Hi, yes I am on the free plan, which supposedly allows me 50 chats per month. It is not that I don't feel like I have used it much; I haven't used it at all in any editor. I can't use it because I get this error message.

That sounds really frustrating, especially if you haven’t actually hit your Copilot chat limits. There are a few things that might be causing this:

Account Type & Subscription: Double check that your GitHub account is still covered by an active Copilot subscription (sometimes payments or changes can cause interruptions).

Multiple Devices or Accounts: If you use Copilot across multiple devices or with different GitHub accounts, the usage can add up and trigger the limit even if it doesn’t seem like it.

Shared or Organization Licenses: If you’re on an organization or enterprise license, limits can sometimes be shared or set differently by your admin.

Visual Studio Extension Caching: Sometimes, Visual Studio or the Copilot extension gets “stuck.” Try fully closing VS, restarting your computer, or even reinstalling the Copilot extension.

Backend Delay or Bug: Occasionally, Copilot’s backend takes a while to reset your usage, or there’s a glitch that causes limits to be enforced incorrectly.

What you can do:

Double check your Copilot subscription status here.
Try logging in to Copilot on a different device or in the browser to see if the problem is specific to Visual Studio.
If everything seems fine and you’re still locked out, contact GitHub Support with your details. They can check your account on their end and fix limit/reset issues if needed.

I'm getting this more and more often now; it's like something just zaps away all the usage, without me actually using it. Never really had a chance to experience copilot because of this. Would love to try it one day lol

May it's due to the auto completions done by Copilot. So it might hit the limit.

Are you 'sure' you are referring to auto completions by Copilot, or the 'Quick Actions and Refactorings...' option? If it is the 'quick actions', then yes, I use those all the time.

If you are referring to Copilot, I get, maybe, a few uses and then its run out for another month before it briefly blips up again the following month when the usage is topped up. But I never get more than 1 - 2 minutes of use before it is at its limit again. Definitely not enough time to experience anything meaningful.
