$\begingroup$ Hallo, this looks very good! (Thank you also to David for first response.) I am still not comfortable with just associating a country's population and time zone, however. As an instance, Russia spans a lot of time zones, and the population is different in e.g. St. Petersburg or Siberia. Still, this is appreciated! $\endgroup$

$\begingroup$ Sure, that is fair. You might not want to accept my answer then, and see if anyone else can come up with something better. I guess how much you want to reproduce the xkcd plot exactly and how much you want an actual answer to the same question is something you should clarify. $\endgroup$
