$\begingroup$ Chord-length parametrization, as used here by Vitaliy, is a very popular method for generating almost-equispaced points when computing the arclength function is impractical. Sometimes, one also uses the centripetal parametrization for the purpose. See E.T.Y. Lee's paper for more details. $\endgroup$ Commented Jul 20, 2012 at 8:32
