- 1Your quote tells why cars don't run lean, right? So the catalytic converter will function properly. Also, and air pump for an engine is called a "turbo" or a "supercharger". You may have heard of those.JPhi1618– JPhi16182016-01-26 19:09:02 +00:00Commented Jan 26, 2016 at 19:09
- @JPhi1618 Oh yes that makes so much sense now. I'd better change the question a bit now that I've had that sudden realisation!Max Goodridge– Max Goodridge2016-01-26 19:11:54 +00:00Commented Jan 26, 2016 at 19:11
- 2IIRC from other posts here, when running lean the combustion chamber temperature increases as you run lean. The higher temperature bring it's own issues.cdunn– cdunn2016-01-26 19:21:45 +00:00Commented Jan 26, 2016 at 19:21
- 1I like your intent, but it's still two questions, and "because catalytic converter" is still the answer to the first question.JPhi1618– JPhi16182016-01-26 19:42:39 +00:00Commented Jan 26, 2016 at 19:42
- 1"However, I don't understand why the catalytic converter can't handle or be adapted to handle more air in the engine." Because science - it's as simple as that. Remember that catalysts already use REALLY expensive metal because it's the only stuff that works, and the limits of what catalysts can handle are what set how the engine has to work. If you invent a lean-NOx catalyst that works at exhaust temperatures and costs less than $500 per car, every automotive manufacturer and environmental agency on Earth will sell their children for a chance to get that patent. But so far, no dice.Graham– Graham2016-01-27 12:13:21 +00:00Commented Jan 27, 2016 at 12:13

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. fuel-system), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
