Jan 7, 2014 at 19:00 comment added Shiva @PaulTomblin Thank you Paul. In a professional that's brutally ageist, I am sure a lot of developers are thinking "Am I too old to learn all this new stuff?". Like you've said, side projects are the answer.

Jun 21, 2009 at 3:32 comment added Avery Payne I've had to go through Visual FoxPro, strange design decisions, 3rd party vendors, and a transition to a OO framework/API that has so many broken components that I'm not even sure where to begin. Reading your response reminds me that (a) it's all temporary and (b)there's always something else new to try, and lastly (c) it reminds me why I got into this to begin with. Thanks, and +1.
Mar 9, 2009 at 15:32 comment added Dave Nice to know I'll still be able to learn new tricks... ;)
Mar 2, 2009 at 18:02 comment added Jared Updike +1 for giving me hope that I will still enjoy my own personal programming projects in 20 years (after 15 years of programming)
Mar 1, 2009 at 5:32 comment added John Ellinwood Sure, I don't know anything about a lot of questions here too because they're just not in the field I work in. The key is to find some that are interesting and learn about them. Or find one to really learn a lot about.
Feb 26, 2009 at 18:41 comment added danbystrom "I don't know the answers to 90% of the questions here". Wow! You know the answer to 1 out of 10 questions!!!!! I haven't even heard the words in 9 out of 10 questions before! :-)
Feb 26, 2009 at 15:29 comment added Skizz I'm currently learning linux system configuration and kde programming as a side project. There's always something new to learn in this profession!
Feb 26, 2009 at 15:26 comment added Robert S. Congrats Paul! Your gold badge came from a good answer. :)
Feb 26, 2009 at 14:29 comment added asp316 I was feeling the same way this morning. VERY good answer!
Feb 26, 2009 at 11:52 comment added Paul Tomblin Woo hoo, I got it!
Feb 26, 2009 at 4:48 comment added Robert S. Oh man, you're on your way to a gold badge!
Feb 26, 2009 at 0:04 comment added Greg Hewgill @Paul: I got a gold badge a few weeks ago for a "Great Answer". But I had to mention Jon Skeet to do it! It's sort of sad that my highest rated answers are non-technical.
Feb 25, 2009 at 22:14 comment added Mike Dunlavey @Paul: Nice job. Said it better than I could.
Feb 25, 2009 at 21:01 comment added Erik Ahlswede Thanks for the insight. This is encouraging to hear that other people struggle too =)
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:57 comment added Paul Tomblin Has anybody but Jon Skeet gotten a gold badge after the beta ended? I doubt it - questions don't stay on the front page long enough to get seen.
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:55 comment added Robert S. I got my gold badge for posting an XKCD comic. I don't think that's what Jeff intended.
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:43 comment added BoltBait Man, those gold badges are tough to get. (Of course. If I get 32 more votes on my top answer I'll get a gold badge out of it. But, that'll never happen.) Should I be discouraged? ;)
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:37 comment added Paul Tomblin I'm still hoping for my first gold badge. Unlike some people. :-P
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:36 comment added Robert S. Pff, like you needed another silver badge. ;P
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:35 comment added Paul Tomblin Yeah, I was getting worried having made it past lunch time without hitting my limit.
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:34 comment added gnostradamus Well, there's your 200 for the day Paul! =)
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:26 comment added Rex M +1 people who have a working knowledge of more than 20-30% of the questions asked here cannot be an expert in any of them. Really good senior devs and software architects with a decade+ experience can probably answer ~/<10%
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:24 comment added Paul Tomblin @grapefrukt - you've noticed my method for getting 17K rep, have you?
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:20 comment added grapefrukt and as soon as you see a question that falls into those 10%, snipe it like there's no tomorrow!
Feb 25, 2009 at 20:17 comment added Erik Forbes Excellent answer.
