Your second suggestion is what we're currently doing in the "markdown" mode, ~to match the behavior of the old editor~. I'm not opposed to adding this type of functionality to the rich-text mode as well. Thank you for the suggestion! edit: I was mistaken, the old editor behaves like your first suggestion.
