Personally, I would go about this in a different way: All read messages show normally (like the 2nd one you have, without bold), but the unread ones have an highlighted background (and maybe bold text).

It's a feature, not a bug. Yes, I also said about this on the original announcement. And no, IMO the opacity makes some strain to the eyes. @IsmaelMiguel This is exactly what I proposed, to keep the old design which is consistent, more unique and not trying to be GMail.
